The Local Government Unit of Moalboal, in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) – Tañon Strait Protected Seascape Protected Area Management Office and JCI Moalboal Katropa, conducted a simultaneous coastal clean‑up and Information, Education and Communication (IEC) campaign on March 3, 2026 in line with the global observance of World Seagrass Day. Held in selected coastal barangays, with Basdiot as one of the focal sites, the activity carried the theme “From Roots to Resilience: Seagrass in Action,” underscoring the crucial role of seagrass meadows in climate regulation, marine biodiversity conservation, fisheries productivity, and coastal protection.
The half‑day program started at 6:00 AM with registration, preliminaries, and a brief orientation before the field activities. Participants composed of TSPS personnel, barangay officials, representatives from national government agencies, civic organizations, schools, and community volunteers joined the community‑led shoreline and seagrass‑bed clean‑up. This was complemented by lectures on seagrass ecology, identification of local seagrass species, and discussions on conservation strategies and the impacts of marine litter on fisheries, livelihoods, and coastal ecosystems.
Mayor Inocentes G. Cabaron hailed the initiative as a meaningful opportunity to strengthen environmental awareness and community engagement while reducing threats to the municipality’s marine resources that support tourism and fisheries. He encouraged coastal residents, people’s organizations, youth groups, and other stakeholders to sustain their participation in similar activities and to demonstrate Moalboal’s continuing commitment to protecting the Tañon Strait Protected Seascape and its rich marine biodiversity.
